The medicalization of birth is something I find really interesting. It's strictly a modern (last 40 years) phenomenon. Personally, I think a lot of it has to do with taking control. A lot of the "routine" procedures in hopital births (shaving the pubic hair, administering an enema, removing the father from the room initially) have no real medical purpose. There's a book on the subject; I want to say by Naomi Wolf, but I'm not sure.
