Ayers

Time for a little research into this Ayers thing... Here's some of the info I found...

I have 2 observations about this:
1) The fact that McCain and Palin are bringing out this scare tactic is evidence of how desperate they have become... especially when this information was already fact-checked after Hillary brought it up months ago...  (The 2 articles below are responses to when Hillary brought out this info back in the spring.)
2) I do not condone what Ayers may or may not have done involving violence and bombs.  I mean, I definitely would NEVER vote for Bill Ayers should he ever decide to run for President.  But that's not what we have here.  I don't see how something that Ayers did when Obama was 8 years old, and for which he was never convicted, and which Obama has never supported, should somehow reflect upon Obama - who knows the man only casually through community activity (since they are both politically and socially active in their community of Chicago).

Rejecting Obama's Radical Friends
Thursday, May. 29, 2008

Is this association between Obama and these dangerous radicals a scandal? Or is the scandal digging up all this ancient history? Those have been the options in the debate. But the truth is a third option: Ayers and Dohrn are despicable, and yet making an issue of Obama's relationship with them is absurd.
[...]
If Obama's relationship with Ayers, however tangential, exposes Obama as a radical himself, or at least as a man with terrible judgment, he shares that radicalism or terrible judgment with a comically respectable list of Chicagoans and others--including Republicans and conservatives--who have embraced Ayers and Dohrn as good company, good citizens, even experts on children's issues. Northwestern created a "family justice" center for Dohrn to run. Ayers is a "distinguished professor" at the University of Illinois.

Snippets from April 17th article in Newsweek:

Taking Liberties in Philadelphia

In fact, nobody died as a result of bombings in which Ayers said he participated as part of the Weather Underground, at the New York City Police Headquarters in 1970, in a men's lavatory in the Capitol building in 1971 and in a women's restroom in the Pentagon in 1972. The deaths to which Clinton referred were of three Weather Underground members who died when their own "bomb factory" exploded in a Greenwich Village townhouse on March 6, 1970. Ayers was not present. Also, two police officers were murdered in connection with the robbery of a Brinks armored car by Weather Underground members in 1981. That was about a year after Ayers had turned himself in and after all charges against him had been dropped.
[...]
Ayers is now a professor of education at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Obama and Ayers served together for a time on the board of an antipoverty charity, the Woods Fund of Chicago, from 1999 to 2002. Ayers also contributed $200 to Obama's campaign for the Illinois state Senate on March 2, 2001.
[...]
Obama visited Ayers' home in 1995 at the invitation of an Illinois state senator, according to a Feb. 22 story in Politico.com. But Politico concluded, "There's no evidence their relationship is more than the casual friendship of two men who occupy overlapping Chicago political circles and who served together on the board of a Chicago foundation."

[Edit: Another helpful article on this topic from the NY Times was pointed out to me.  This article is dated October 3, 2008.]
