Governor Carcieri has chosen Superior Court Judge Alice Bridget Gibney to be the next presiding justice of her court.
Gibney, 62, who has served as a Superior Court judge for 25 years and before that, as a Workers' Compensation commissioner, was notified of the appointment Thursday afternoon by the governor. The nomination is subject to Senate confirmation.
Gibney, of Warwick, has been the acting presiding justice since Joseph F. Rodgers Jr. retired from the bench last week and is the most senior judge on the state's major trial court. She is married to veteran trial lawyer Robert D. Parrillo. They have one son, Nicholas Parrillo.
Rodgers had supported Gibney's candidacy for the position over two less senior judges on his court who were also finalists for the post -- Daniel A. Procaccini and Jeffrey A. Lanphear.
Testifying in her favor before the Judicial Nominating Commission, Rodgers told the screening panel that Gibney is the "most respected and beloved" justice in his court, including "yours truly."
